The last day at the Inferno Metal Festival 2019 had a good variety of music styles. Prog metal from Opeth, black metal with lots of pyro from 1349, symphonic black metal from Carach Angren, epic black metal from Cult of Fire and blackened death metal from Archgoat. (Photo above: Ravn from 1349)
Friday at Blastfest started out with the same wet weather as the day before. Fortunately it wasn’t raining when I went over to the venue, but the rain came back with a vengeance when I went home after the last band. Hard wind and pouring rain isn’t exactly my kind of weather, so a taxi got me safe back to the hotel. But inside at USF Verftet it was hot and dark with fifteen bands eager to play their songs and fans from all over the world waiting to hear them. (Photo above: Ravn from 1349)
1349 is one of Norway’s leading black metal bands. They were formed in 1997, and they are named after the year the Black death came to Norway, killing more than half of the Norwegian population and somewhere between 50 and 80 million people in Europe. This year it is 666 years since the Black death, and last night 1349 presented their album Hellfire from 2005 at the Vulkan Arena in Oslo, celebrating, or maybe rather commemorating those 666 years.
The Inferno festival in Oslo is arranged every Easter, from Wednesday through Saturday. The first day is a club day, while the three next are arranged at the Rockefeller Music Hall, plus the smaller venue John Dee in the same building. Norway has many black metal bands, and 1349 is one of the best and also well known. When Aborted had to cancel their gig at the Inferno festival, 1349 stepped in. They did a great job at the Rockefeller Music Hall Thursday nught. Here are some pictures from the concert.
