Vintage Trouble © Per Ole HagenBergen Fest is usually my first summer festival every year, and I always look forward to this festival. They have a good booking, the organizers are extremely professional and also friendly, and there is a good spirit there. This year’s festival started out Wednesday night with Biffy Clyro as the headliner, and with top performances from Vintage Trouble and many other artists. Steve Vai – Guitar Hero Par Excellense

Steve Vai © Per Ole HagenI have seen many great guitarists in my time, but few of the calibre of Steve Vai. What he can make a guitar do for him is amazing. He has also understood that a live performance is part music, part visual, and he gives the crowd value for their money. Sunday night Steve Vai played a packed Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo.

Ulrich Ellison And Tribe – Power Trio from Austin

Ulrich Ellison and Tribe © Per Ole HagenEvery year when I am in Austin, I discover one or more artists that I haven’t seen before, and that I like. Two years ago I discovered Donn’s Depot and the lovely Mondays with Chris Gage and friends. Last year I saw The Imperial Golden Crown Harmonizers again, after too many years since the last time I saw them. This year the concert with Ulrich Ellison and Tribe was a very pleasant surprise. These days the band are on the tail end of a two months tour in Europe, and last night they played at Herr Nilsen in Oslo.

The Kinkster is Back in Oslo Again

Kinky Friedman © Per Ole HagenTwo years ago I saw Kinky Friedman at Café Mono in Oslo and had a grand evening. Last night he was back, this time at Vulkan arena with a new CD and with some new songs. His quotes are mostly the same as before, but with a few new ones. With Kinky you know what you get, and it is always a joy to see him.

A-ha in Oslo with Cast in Steel

A-ha © Per Ole HagenNorway has a small, but eclectic number of bands and artists who are known outside of Scandinavia, a-ha being the foremost and commercially most succesful. So far the band have sold more than 100 million records. They also had the official Guinnes record for the biggest paying audience to one concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1991, with 198.000 people paying to see them, three times as many as those who paid for Guns ’n’ Roses or George Michael at the same event, Rock in Rio.

Roky Erickson plays 13th Floor Elevators at Rockefeller

Roky Erickson 23042016-28Fifty years after the start, Roky Erickson is on tour with his band The Hounds of Baskerville playing the songs of his famous band The 13th Floor Elevators. His career since the 60s has gone up and down, with more downs than ups, but since around 2005 he has had a slow and steady upwards movement. The concert at Rockefeller last night showed that Roky Erickson is still capable of playing good concerts.

Baroness with High-Energy Show in Oslo

Baroness © Per Ole HagenBaroness is a band that I like a lot, both their albums and live. Their music is melodic metal – heavy, alternative, progressive – you decide for yourself. Personally I like their energy coupled with some really good melodies, as can be heard on their newest album, Purple. On Wednesday March 30 they played at Rockefeller in Oslo.

SXSW 2016: Saturday at SoCo and The Continental Club with Patricia Vonne, Jon Langford and more

Patricia Vonne © Per Ole HagenSaturday was the last day of this year’s SXSW, and it was a good end to ten days of Interactive and Music for my part. I have attended seminars at both festivals with themes like transparency in the music business, data ethics, the right to be forgotten, Copyright in EU vs. the US, etc., and seen a lot of concerts every night. I also got to see and photograph President Obama and Michelle Obama. The last day of the festival I started at the Yard Dog with Churchwood and Jon Langford, and continued at the Continental Club with six other acts, among them Patricia Vonne, Jon Dee Graham, Tameca Jones and Linda Gail Lewis.
